A Brief Introduction to the Philosophy of Art

Art is an ever-changing list of human activities between creative emotion, technical skill, beauty, personal insight, or personal concept to express personal creativity, beauty, strength, or emotional power. It has been said that the artist creates works of art for others to enjoy and be inspired by their existence. It should not be confused with mere ornamentation and decoration. Although art involves physical actions, it is an endeavor to communicate something significant in our lives.

Defining art is one of the most difficult tasks because the definition of art can change depending on who you ask. For instance, when looking at art, some will consider art to include only paintings or sculptures while others define art as the result of processes such as communication, literature and other forms of expression. Others may focus on artistic styles, while yet others will define art by its aesthetic properties such as form, color, texture, and so on. When trying to understand the different definitions on how to define art, it helps to know a little bit about each of these various definitions to get a better picture of what art truly is.

For those of you more familiar with the academic definition of art, aesthetics, and visual form, you are probably thinking that the definition of art is nothing more than an attempt to label or classify an artwork based on the visual form it generates. This is a very broad and general definition and overlooks a number of important factors that shape the content of an artwork. For instance, aesthetics must take into account the audience the work is intended for and also the purpose or theme of the work itself. For example, if an artistic composition is to be created for decorations or decorate the interiors of your home, you need to take into account the practical aspects of the room or area where the artwork will be hung. Aesthetics should be equally applicable to any form of art and not just to paintings.

One of the most influential definitions of art was that of eighteenth century French painter Male Boucher, who was also the most famous painter in his time. His concept of the aesthetic had much to do with the emotions he felt towards things, and how they affect his overall emotional state and his personal style. The most famous example of his concept of aesthetics is his famous painting The Female Nudes.

Another very influential individual of the modern era was the artist Paul Gauguin, and the styles of his paintings held great importance in defining the modern artistic style. Like Boucher, Gauguin was a major figure of the art world, and much of his work had much to do with the emotion he experienced as he looked upon the world around him. The term ‘art’ was derived from Gauguin’s school of painting called the Pre-Impressionist Movement, in which a painted object acts as a representation of an unformed object or of a desire in the mind of the artist. While the movement was highly regarded and highly criticized by its practitioners and their critics, there is no debate as to the fact that the work of Gauguin and others like him greatly influenced the way modern art has come to be. Today, many artists still adhere to parts of the styles and concepts of Pre-Impressionism, including Benois, Camille Picasso and Edvard Munch.

Though there are many forms and interpretations of art, the one thing all artists have in common is the ability to create an aesthetic that appeals to the senses and leaves an emotional impact on those who view it. Modern art does not attempt to depict any kind of transcendent reality, instead the focus is on expressing the artist’s feelings. Modern art also seeks to answer some fundamental questions about the human experience, such as the existence and the nature of life, and questions that have long been debated by philosophers and scientists alike. All artists hope to leave their mark on the world with their art.
