Don’t you love getting invited to a party or celebration? The invitation itself just tends to make us feel wanted, doesn’t it? I want to give you an exciting invitation, too, but this one is of a different sort. This actually comes from Jesus, an invitation to rest.
We’ve talked about our eternal rest in the introduction to our Gift of Rest Series found here. What a celebration that will be! And what relief there will be when we know all our struggles will be over and we’ll finally be safe at home.
But the invitation Jesus gives us is for here and now. He is calling you to come to Him and find rest. Not just physical rest, which is definitely important, but He is calling you to a deeper rest – where you can relax and be yourself and know everything is okay.
Listen to His call:
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matt. 11:28-30 ESV
He’s Inviting You to Be With Him
A few years ago, I was trying very hard to be all God wanted me to be and not really doing a good job. I didn’t understand rest. Being good enough was just too demanding.
But I began to learn about grace and how Jesus has already done it all to make me enough. I learned that I could come to Him and find the rest for which I was longing. One day, I was studying this passage above from Matthew, and I began to write.
The words didn’t seem to come from me. I believe the Holy Spirit was directing me what Jesus would say if He were there with me, helping me see His heart. A few weeks ago, I found the notebook where I had written those words. I felt like you needed to hear them, too.
So, I thought I’d do something different and read it aloud to you. This is a first for me! I won’t tell you how many times I did this to get it halfway right! But hopefully you’ll hear what Jesus is wanting to say to you about rest.
As my gift to you, I have a free copy of this devotional for you that you can print out and read on your own time. My prayer is that it will give you the encouragement you need to accept Jesus and His invitation to rest. You can get the freebie below!
